Recapture the Wonder

I recently started to read "Recapture the Wonder" by Ravi Zacharias. I was touched by soemthing he shared in the first chapter... because I related to it. God has been giving me a renewed sense of His love for the lost, and, in particular, the unloved.

Ravi was writing about an experience he had while he and his wife were out in the city walking. They saw an old, homeless man searching through garbage for something of worth.

"Whenever we see such a person whose whole being reveals the mark of such impoverishment my wife remarks, "To think that he was once a baby, held in the arms of his mother while she dreamed great dreams for him."

If only we all had eyes to see individuals as the Lord does. Sometimes I can't believe it when I hear or see followers of Christ who have such disdain for the smelly, dirty and hungry. I'm not claiming to perfectly love those who are outcast and dejected by society, but I do see their worth. I see this as a challenge for me to always take a stand for the worth of the unlovely in the sense of acknowledging who they truly are (God's creation), not only verbally, but through action.
